Recording powerful and punchy drums is something I have been after since I started my audio engineering journey. I have read countless articles and books about drum recording, but most of them have failed to give me the results I am after. Most of the time, the biggest limiting factor of aggressive drum sound is the tempo. If you want the faster parts not to sound like a complete mess, you need to have total control over the sound.
Iām a drummer. I used to play drums in a death metal band called Dauntless (1993-2008) and in various other projects before focusing into recording and mixing. I have played drums for 20 years and have 10 years of professional recording experience. I run my little studio called Drop Hammer Studios and I have also worked in many other studios. I have had the honour of recording many different drummers, and many of them have been a lot better than me.
Todayās drum sound is not very acoustic. Most records have some sample replacement or augmenting going on to make the sound more powerful and consistent. I want to create a great drum sound right from the start and try to keep it acoustic in the mix. Get it right in the beginning and the mixing engineer will get 100 % out of your tracks. Even if he is going to use sample replacement.
I will go through every detail of drum recording from my own point of view. The approach is based on my experience on how to get a sound where the power, separation and definition is taken to itās maximum level. After you have gone through the first part, you can find one chapter dedicated to ārawā drums. It features examples of what I do differently when the end result calls for more traditional, āorganicā drum sound.

Epic Taiko Ensemble is the most comprehensive and deep sampled collection of Ensemble Taiko on the market. The library was recorded in our signature Cathedral and comes with two microphone positions (close and mid)ā¦. Epic Taiko Ensemble follows the same principles established in our other epic percussion libraries in terms of articulations, velocity layering and round robin. Articulations have up to 8 velocity layers and all sampled at 10 round robin (aka repetitions). We sampled all the classic Taiko drums from the big sounding, O-Daiko, Nagado Daiko to the smaller and more snare like, Shime. In addition we also played the drums with hands and alternative stick types ā and we got the most comprehensive collection of clacks made with different type of sticks and by hitting the rims of the larger Taiko drums.
In addition we also recorded a comprehensive amount (+1.6GB) of ensemble loops with the Taiko Ensemble. The loops were recorded at 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130 and 140 BPM. The loops are intended to be used as stand-alone and/or in combination with the multi-samples. The loops contain both classic Taiko style rhythms and more contemporary rhythms for film scoring etc.

Sylenth1 needs no introduction. One of the most popular VST synths in the market. With Ableton Live and other DAWs requiring Jbridge in order to run 32bit vsts iāve went on and used the latest 64bit version to remake and fix some of old skins. Tested and supplied with original setup, keygen and a huge bank library iāve been collecting for some time.
